What is the difficulty level for a parent of a college student to obtain academic records?

My parents want to verify my performance at school and I'm wondering if there is anyway that they'd be able to get ahold of my college transcipts (through calling the records office, etc.). Anyone know if this information is kept confidential until requested by the student or how does this work?

Thank you :)What is the difficulty level for a parent of a college student to obtain academic records?
In the US, no one is able to access the transcripts of a student without expressed written permission of that student, not even their parents. It's a regulation called FERPA.What is the difficulty level for a parent of a college student to obtain academic records?
Are you 18 yet?

If you are under 18, then they can access any and all of your student records. If you are over 18, they cannot access any records aside from directory information, which is the sort of information that is public record anyhow. This sort of information includes things like your local address, phone number, your major, what classes you are enrolled in (but not how you do).

There is an exception to this, if you over 18 and are claimed as a dependent of your parents on your and their tax forms. If you are independent, then they cannot request your records. Some schools do have policies that do not allow a records release in this case, but, if you are in this case then you are not protected by federal law.

You can, however, waive that right to privacy, and your parents may ask for you to do that. Which would allow them to look at any or your records, just like you could. As another answerer mentioned, it is due to FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Of course they won't give your parents information from your college without your permission. You're an adult; they do not have a right to it.

You might be able to request it to give to your parents, but I doubt they would release the information to anyone else.

But aside from that, how old are you for goodness sake? Stand up for yourself and tell your parents they shouldn't expect to see that sort of information. They should be able to trust you're doing well, and if they don't, then there's something wrong with your relationship with them.
I had to sign a waiver that allowed my Mother to look at my records (her reasoning-I'm paying for it, I get to see your progress). Since you will be 18, without the waiver your parents are unable to even talk about your involvement with the school.
Pretty sure the only person that can obtain your college transcript is you! Some schools may be different but at my college they can only give transcripts to the student.
Yea, confidential. Secrets can be bad, ya know.
